Abu Dhabi is a city that surprises at every turn. From serene natural escapes to ultra-modern attractions, there’s so much to explore. Here’s a list of must-do experiences to make the most of your visit.
1. Kayak Through Jubail Mangrove Park
Start your adventure with a trip to Jubail Mangrove Park. The mangroves are stunning, with water that shifts from teal to bright blue the deeper you go. If it’s hot outside, plan an early morning kayak to beat the sun.
You might get lucky and spot jellyfish. On my tour, we saw three, which our guide said was incredibly rare. And yes, these were the type you could gently pick up. Floating along the mangroves while holding a jellyfish with the Abu Dhabi skyline in the background felt surreal.
You can kayak without a guide, but I highly recommend one. They can ensure you don’t get lost and help you appreciate the ecosystem more. I did a three-hour tour with Noukhada Adventure Company, located inside Jannah Eastern Mangroves Suites, and it was perfect.
Essentials to bring:
Water shoes for slippery rocks
Waterproof phone case for photos
Towel and sunscreen
Cash, since card options are limited
2. Louvre Abu Dhabi
The Louvre Abu Dhabi is a must-visit for art lovers and architecture enthusiasts. The curated exhibits are impressive, with standout pieces including statues of Africans and Native Americans, a rarity in museums outside of dedicated collections.
The architecture itself is breathtaking. I saved it for the end of my visit and wished I had explored it more thoroughly. The museum has rights to use the Louvre name from Paris for 30 years thanks to a 400-million-euro deal.
It’s worth a visit, though I’m not sure I’d return unless there’s a special exhibit.
3. FIT at Yas Mall
Trying a local gym is one of my favorite travel habits, and FIT at Yas Mall did not disappoint. The gym is modern, conveniently located inside the mall, and perfect for trying a workout class with trainers who actually know your name.
The vibe is welcoming, the equipment is new, and recovery tools like vibrating massage rollers make it feel next-level. While they don’t have a sauna or steam room, the technology-focused recovery options more than make up for it. After your workout, the mall is perfect for grabbing lunch or groceries.
4. Brunch at Cyan Brasserie
If brunch is your thing, head to Cyan Brasserie. It’s in a gorgeous hotel and offers a mix of adventurous flavors and familiar options, including camel’s milk and shakshuka. The view is insane, the food is top notch, and the setting is sophisticated but not intimidating.
5. Day Pass at The St. Regis Abu Dhabi
I love a day pass at luxury hotels, and The St. Regis Abu Dhabi delivers. With access to a private beach and pool, it’s the perfect way to indulge without paying full room rates. The view of the islands is stunning, and the food, including poke bowls, is delicious. Marriott members can even get discounts on dining.
6. CAVE Cafe
For a more low-key but visually stunning experience, CAVE Cafe is a must. Designed to look like an actual cave, it’s great for remote work or just soaking in the unique atmosphere. The cafe balances cool vibes with reasonable prices and quality coffee.
7. Joud Coffee Al Qana
If you want local flavors in a beautiful setting, Joud Coffee is my pick. It’s in the same area as CAVE Cafe, so you can visit both. The patio is lovely if you’re not there in the peak summer heat, and the drinks highlight regional flavors you won’t find anywhere else.
8. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
No trip to Abu Dhabi is complete without visiting the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Its size and scale are overwhelming in the best way, and the colors are as vibrant as the photos you’ve seen.
Tips:
Take a guided tour to better understand the Islamic practices and history
Dress modestly: long pants, long sleeves, and a headscarf for women
Pre-book tours to avoid long waits
9. Al Maya Island and Resort
Relax in style at Al Maya Island. This resort offers pristine beaches, luxurious pools, and an immersive experience of Abu Dhabi’s high-end hospitality. A perfect day trip if you’re looking to unwind.
10. Qasr Al Watan
Explore Qasr Al Watan, the presidential palace. It’s not just about grand architecture; the palace offers insight into the UAE’s history, governance, and culture. The interiors are breathtaking and full of intricate details.
11. Observation Deck at 300
For panoramic city views, visit the Observation Deck at 300. Whether for sunset or daytime sightseeing, it provides a stunning perspective of Abu Dhabi’s skyline, desert, and coastline.
12. Yas Mall, Warner Bros World, and Ferrari World
Yas Mall: Shopping, dining, and entertainment under one roof
Warner Bros World: Fun for families and thrill-seekers
Ferrari World Yas Island: Perfect for adrenaline junkies
Optional Dubai Day Trip
If you have extra time, Dubai is just a 1.5-hour drive away:
Palm Island: Man-made marvel, best seen from above
Dubai Marina: Nice to walk around but not essential unless you love yachts
Dubai Mall: Massive, immersive shopping experience with everything from ice skating to Chinatown
Abu Dhabi blends natural beauty, luxury, and culture like few cities can. Whether you’re kayaking through mangroves, exploring world-class museums, or brunching with a view, there’s something for every traveler.
