While exploring Cartagena, there are numerous activities to consider, but one experience you simply can't miss is a visit to El Totumo volcano, located approximately 45 minutes outside the city center. Although it requires about half a day, the journey is entirely worthwhile. Those fortunate enough to venture to volcanic regions understand the rarity and significance of witnessing such natural wonders, and El Totumo offers an exceptional opportunity to immerse oneself in its majestic presence. However, before embarking on this adventure, it's essential to be prepared with cash, as there are additional expenses awaiting travelers eager to partake in various indulgences on-site. According to ancient legend, the volcano's once fervent activity was subdued by a local priest who infused it with holy water, transforming its fiery temperament into tranquil mud.

All you really need to bring along is a towel, your phone, and some cash. Upon arrival, you'll begin your ascent to the top of the volcano. Once there, attendants will be available to hold onto your belongings while you immerse yourself in the mud. Another staff member can capture the entire experience on your phone for you. You'll wait in line until it's your turn to enter the volcano's summit and then exit. While inside, you can opt for a massage, although it's not quite what you might expect—it involves the application of mud all over your body rather than traditional techniques.

The mud acts like a natural mask, rich in nutrients that offer incredible benefits for your skin. While you're up there, take some time to relax in the mud and enjoy the stunning view, mingling with other visitors. Despite the volcano's considerable depth, thanks to the mud's buoyancy, you'll find yourself floating—a rather surreal experience. The mud itself maintains a temperature that's both cool and warm, surprisingly neutral. Although one might expect it to be warm due to people being in it, it remains consistently comfortable. As visitors cycle in and out of the mud, the path down the volcano becomes quite slippery from the muddy footprints. Descending to the lake nestled at the volcano's base, you'll encounter women who offer a unique service—they'll guide you into the water, thoroughly cleanse you, and ensure every nook and cranny is immaculate. If you're fortunate, they may even assist in removing and rinsing your clothing before helping you back into it—a service you'll find indispensable.

The process involves physically removing the mud, so expect whatever you're wearing to get quite dirty. Fortunately, if you do decide to strip down, the water offers some privacy, allowing you to sit comfortably while they clean your swimsuit thoroughly. Afterward, before boarding the bus or departing in your vehicle, you'll settle payment with the attendants for their various services. Each service, such as wiping you down, taking photos while you're in the mud, or holding onto your belongings, typically costs one US dollar or five pesos. Apart from the volcano and the vendors in the vicinity, there are only a few spots to grab food in the area.
